Great Ayton - known as Captain Cook's birthplace - is a must for history buffs who want to find out more about their nautical hero. The man is ensconced in local folklore, and is commemorated in a specialised museum. His mother's burial ground is opposite the holiday cottage. Real fans can take the Cook Country Tour, which ropes through Mrton, Great Ayton, Staithes, Whitby and Saltburn, following his life and times.
