The award winning Postgate Inn is an exquisite little pub built in 1860 and tucked into the side of a valley in Egton Bridge near Whitby. In 2006 the Postgate Inn was winner of the Punch Tavern North Regional Best Food Award. The inn has a warm and sociable atmosphere, welcoming both locals and tourists alike, and sits in beautiful surroundings alongside the River Esk at the bottom of a lush, wooded valley within the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Guests benefit from easy access to both the Yorkshire Moors and the holiday attractions of the Yorkshire coast at Whitby, Scarborough and Filey. Perfect for Yorkshire romantic retreats, the inn offers five luxury rooms, an intimate candlelit restaurant and an atmospheric, lively bar.
The Postgate Inn has, in recent years, been refurbished to a high standard whilst maintaining many original features. Our extensive menu caters for most tastes and budgets, and delightful original features, such as the Victorian stove in the main lounge which burns cheerfully, add to the inn's charm and character. Diners come from all over Yorkshire and beyond to enjoy our hospitality, and to sample the excellent food which includes the best traditional Yorkshire and time honoured British recipes with a hint of modern European influences. On the menu are the very best Yorkshire meats and local seafood! The pub has an attractive beer garden and a large car park. Join in fun of our regular special events including charity nights, blues nights and karaoke sessions.
Choose from five pleasantly appointed rooms, all fully equipped with TV and tea/coffee making facilities. Three of the rooms are en suite, whilst the other two share a bathroom. Off-peak and dinner bed and breakfast terms are available and room types include family size to standard rooms with shared facilities.
The inn is perfectly situated only six miles from the famous "Heartbeat" village of Aidensfield (Goathland). The Postgate is something of a celebrity, but under its stage name of "The Black Dog" which is how it appears in the popular TV series Heartbeat. Its real name, Postgate, remembers the martyr Nicholas Postgate, who was born in the village in 1596. Ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in France, he returned to the Moors to minister to those still loyal to the outlawed faith. He was betrayed and at the age of 81 was hung, drawn and quartered in York.
