Email Enquiryfor more informationSandside Cottage, two cottages converted into one, sits in a cluster of what once were 5 harbour side town houses, and is as close as you can get to the harbour without getting your feet wet. The earliest deeds date back to 1724 and many of the beams in it came from old sailing ships. In fact the beams in the basement are carved and dated with many an old sailors initials. This fabulous old building is spread over 4 floors with winding staircases and original features. We have 4 bedrooms, two with en suite baths. The layout could easily accommodate two families, each with their own part of the house rising up from a communal living area. The front door opens to a flight of stairs winding through the house to the attic. Off to the right after 4 stairs is the restful drawing room, which features an original cast iron range. Leather chesterfield sofas, and a view across the harbour make this a wonderful refuge.
Further up the stairs to the dining room, with a large comfortable sofa and dining table seating 8, this room, also has scenic views. The original fireplace is still in situ, set in an exposed brick and beam wall. The kitchen is to the rear of the dining room equipped with everything you would expect of a modern kitchen, including dishwasher and washing machine, but set amidst an original cast iron fireplace with exposed brickwork on the chimney breast. Two large windows look out east across the seafront towards the far pier, with the rising sun shining in through this room on a morning. Leading from the kitchen is a lobby area with fire exit, two separate toilets and a large walk in shower.
The main bedrooms lead up from separate staircases in the dining room and the kitchen. Up another flight from each of these are two more rooms. The main bedroom to the front of the house overlooks the harbour; an open-plan room with an antique wooden double bed, fitted wardrobe, roll top bath and basin. The main bedroom leading from the kitchen is also an en suite double room with a large, free-standing roll top bath and small basin. This room shares the same view as the kitchen. We have two attic rooms, one with two single beds and a skylight the other with a queen size bed and a small window looking east. This is a great window to view the stars from on an evening.
Please note that whilst all the fireplaces are original and intact, they are not suitable for use and guests are not permitted to light fires. The cottage is a very quirky building, and though all effort has been made to make the building suitable for modern living, we have had to work within an 18th century structure; the staircases are narrow and steep with low lintels and the attic rooms have low beams.
