We're located within a small hamlet on the site of the first water-powered mill in the Colne Valley (17th century), 7 miles from Huddersfield & 10 from Halifax, West Yorkshire. Our little valley, Merrydale, is designated as a Site of Scientific Interest, because of its flora and fauna. The cottage is furnished mainly with antiques and has its own stone paved secluded terrace as well as a large shared garden that was featured in the magazine "25 Beautiful Gardens". Tyas Cottage, within the sheltered, wooded valley, Merrydale, is at the end of a secluded cobbled, cul-de-sac. This was an ancient, pack-horse route. Being adjacent to 'free to roam' woodlands makes it a magical place for children and the gardens include a hazel tunnel and and a swing (next to the waterfall). The nearby canal and Standedge Tunnel have been recently restored, and Tyas Cottage is within walking distance of the Pennine Way and Marsden, home of the Riverhead Brewery. It is an unusually energy efficient cottage (in addition to its insulated ground floors, triple insulated walls, under-floor heating and double glazing throughout, energy for its hybrid heating system is provide by the following: a wood burning stove, a multi-fuel cooker and boiler, a solar thermal array and an air-source heat pump). Our recently installed a water-driven turbine, although operational, awaits completion of the electrical elements of the system (due for completion by the end of 2009).

Merrydale is an unusually secluded spot, filled with birdsong and the sound of running water, yet relatively close to several large cities and all the attractions that go with them. It is furnished with good quality antiques, including a Georgian mahogany carved 4 poster bed. It is also highly energy efficient, has underfloor heating and a wood burner for open log fires.
