Whitby is a popular seaside town lying on Yorkshire's rugged east coast and is steeped in history. The harbour remains busy and was once the workplace of the young James Cook and home to Scoresby's whaling fleet. The old town is characterised by its charming cobbled streets and is full of unique shops selling antiques, local crafts and the famous Whitby Jet jewellery. All of this is presided over by the imposing ruins of the 13th Century abbey. Lovers of Bram Stoker's Dracula will enjoy the climb up the famous 199 steps to St Mary's Church and graveyard, which inspired the author to pen this classic horror story.
