Take a step back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Our magnificent steam engines, beautiful rural stations and smartly uniformed staff make for the perfect day out! From smoke and steam pouring from the engines to the cosy wood-panelled carriages and friendly conductor service, the railway is both lovingly preserved and charmingly authentic. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is the country’s most popular heritage railway. The 18-mile line runs through the beautiful North York Moors National Park, between the market town of Pickering and the village of Grosmont. Travel between the rugged Yorkshire villages, hike the wind swept moors or spend a day at the seaside in Whitby, the Railway is the perfect starting point for a day out!

Why not visit Whitby with the family, or Grosmont, our 1952 style British Rail station, home to our engine sheds where our locomotives get some well deserved restoration? It is also home to world’s first passenger railway tunnel. Pay a visit to our 'celebrity' station, Goathland, home of Aidensfield in 'Heartbeat' and as the bewitching 'Hogsmeade' in the first Harry Potter film! Newton Dale Halt is the gateway to the National Park whilst Levisham homes an artists studio as well as our cosy camping coach, the perfect base for a Moorland walking holiday! Have a rest in Pickering's tea rooms and enjoy its charming village atmosphere. Download a timetable off our website and start planning your day out with us! A range of single/return/one station tickets are available. Day Rover tickets allow unlimited travel all day and give you the opportunity to break your journey as often as you like. Children under 5 travel free. Other fares, both single and return are available for journeys between any two stations. Dogs are welcome on our trains, please keep them off the seats. Bikes are carried subject to space availability and a charge of £2 per dog/bike is applicable. Make a memorable day out for your group by combining a train journey with pre-arranged coffee mornings, afternoon tea or even a behind the scenes tour of the engine sheds. Guided talks and packed lunches can be supplied. Schools and education groups get discounts all year round and we can tailor make your visit.

Specialities

Wheelchair, mobility vehicle and pushchair access onto trains is via a ramp into the Guard’s Van. A member of platform staff will assist you. Our Guard’s Vans have additional seating for 2 persons, and low-level windows to take in the views. Access into the carriages is available on some trains. Refreshments are available at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont Stations and on some trains. Toilets are availiable at all stations (excpet Newton Dale Halt) and on most trains. Car parking is provided at Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont Stations. Parking is limited so please allow adequate time to catch your train!
