The National Coal Mining Museum is a superb free attraction offering an exciting glimpse into the harsh conditions of the mining industry of bygone years. Take an underground tour to discover the depths descend 140 metres underground down one of Britain's oldest working mines. Your guide will take you around the workings, sharing his mining experiences with you. For some mind-boggling science, visit Hope Pit, a fully restored colliery complex on the 17 hectare Museum site, totally dedicated to science. Discover hands-on interactive models, touch screen displays and some very special virtual guides. The Museum is home to original colliery buildings, some of which are over 130 years old. Meet the mines very own resident celebrities, the pit ponies are stabled during the day so you can meet them and find out about their role in coal mining. The Nature Trail - Discover the tranquility of nature among the birch, oak and ash woodland that now grows on the former colliery spoil tips.

Unique Features

The museum shop has a whole range of items ideal as souvenirs or for presents. These include coal models, lamps and many special publications about mining and the Yorkshire area. The Museum stocks a wide range of models made from coal and a range of books, including those which have been published by the Museum. The café provides a range of home-made meals and snacks. Overlooking the valley to Thornhill and Dewsbury, it is an excellent place to take time out from discovering all that the Museum has to offer. As far as possible the café follows a policy of using regionally produced goods and suppliers, or products that have been fairly traded.

What will you do during the next school holiday? Every school holiday the education team at the National Coal Mining Museum for England runs fun, free activities for families. From art and craft activities, such as making pit-pony sock puppets to building balloon powered coal carts, our workshops can be enjoyed by the whole family! Activities usually have a coal mining theme, focus on a part of the Museum site or relate to the current Special Exhibition.
