There’s nowhere better to start exploring than the eight free museums all conveniently located in the city centre. Come face to face with a woolly mammoth at Hull & East Riding Museum of archaeology and encounter Iron Age weapons, stunning Roman mosaics and Viking treasure. Climb aboard at Streetlife Museum of Transport with all the sights, sounds and smells of the past. Experience 200 years of transport history as you walk down a 1940s high street, board a goods train and even enjoy a carriage ride. Find out about the abolition of the slave trade at Wilberforce House, the birthplace of Hull’s most famous son, William Wilberforce. Behind Streetlife Museum is the River Hull where you can enjoy a guided tour and listen as trawlermen share their experiences of perilous deep sea fishing aboard 1960s trawler the Arctic Corsair (seasonal opening – please phone for details).

Continue your discovery of historic Hull with four other free museums in short walking distance. Situated in Trinity Square adjacent to the magnificent Holy Trinity Church is Hands on History Museum; located in the old Grammar School where William Wilberforce studied, this museum houses the story of Hull and its people including a fascinating glimpse into Victorian times. Situated in Hull’s attractive marina is the Spurn Lightship which for almost 50 years guided ships safely through the treacherous River Humber. Step aboard to discover how it was used as a navigational aid and find out what life was like on board (seasonal and limited opening – phone for details). If you would like to discover more about Hull’s maritime heritage, explore the old Dock Offices in Queen Victoria Square, now home to the city’s Maritime Museum. Discover the whaler’s craft of Scrimshaw and see a whale skeleton, alongside superb ship models, stunning artefacts and free guided tours.
