Ripey Castle and Gardens is hom to the Ingilby Family who have resided in the Castle for 700 years. It's history is one of political, military, religious and social turbulence, of plague and persecution, of renaissance, enlightenment and industrial revolution. It is a tale of romance, courage, loyalty and recklessness. There is no final chapter because we are still here, still enjoying the adventure. Guided tours start at the Castle Front doors on the hour from 10.00am to 3.00pm and take approximately 1hr 15mins to circulate the seven rooms that are on display. The Castle has gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that the tours are as interesting for children as they are for adults. All the guides have a well-developed sense of humour and are friendly and informative. The tours are informative and amusing so do bring your children along - they will be enthralled.
No visit to Ripley Castle would be complete without a stroll around the walled gardens, park and grounds. As you walk along the castle terrace you get fantastic views over the lakes and deer park beyond. The lakeside path takes you to the walled gardens, look for the ha-ha on your right. The large herbaceous borders create such a riot of colour between June and October each year, and the huge range of hot houses contain a highly impressive collection of tropical plants, ferns and cacti. Ancient wisteria and clematis thrive on the high south-facing walls. The park walk takes you round the castle's large ornamental lake, across the waterfall and into the deer park itself. Here herds of fallow deer and cattle graze under the boughs of ancient beech and oak trees. Within the pleasure grounds of Ripley Castle there is a small children's play trail. Let your children release their energy and hunt for clues whilst you wander around and take in the magnificent surroundings. The Castle Gift Shop is where you go to purchase your tickets for the castle and gardens. Here you will find greetings cards of every shape, size and variety, and gifts for every occasion, including: soft toys, humorous cushions, soaps and perfumery, aromatherapy products, films, books, guides and maps, games, cards, bath bombs, soaps and candles. The Castle Tearooms are open all year round and extend the same friendly but efficient hospitality to everybody.
