Yorkshire Hotels and York Hotel Accommodation in Yorkshire

Choosing hotels in Yorkshire usually means you're opting for a more traditional and formal type of accommodation, with standard facilities and guaranteed service. There is much variation between hotels in terms of type, size, location, price and function.

Some Harrogate hotels may be run by groups and offer the same standard of service and the same facilities across the hotel group. Other accommodation may be privately run like hotels in Whitby, with more personal service and perhaps a little more historic Yorkshire character. Before booking your hotel, think about your needs?

York hotels provide the ideal location for a romantic hotel break for two with extensive leisure facilities and intimate restaurant dining, a business hotel venue with excellent conference facilities, a hotel with lively -in-house entertainment, a countryside hotel with beautiful grounds for wedding photos or hotels in Leeds close to theatres and museums - just a few possible variations.

Hotels in York

Hotels in York are everywhere! The city of York is such a popular destination that York hotels seem to be on every street corner. The good news is that with such variety and choice there comes great competition for price, with many cheap York hotels available at very reasonable rates and plenty below £30 per person B&B. This compares favourably to other prime northern cultural historic cities: see Chester hotels and Edinburgh hotels.

Luxury York Hotels offer a wonderful experience and still provide great value with many rooms less than £100 per night. This contrasts sharply with the prices you would expect to stay in historic cities in the south: see Bath hotels and Canterbury hotels.

If you are on a budget in York you can consider a York Bed and Breakfast instead of a hotel. They offer great value for money and with so many places to eat in York and the ease of getting around the city on foot there are plenty of alternatives for dining.

Hotels in Leeds

Not so long ago Leeds was a major player in the Industrial Revolution, receiving city status in only 1893. Now it is famous not only for its educational institutes, most notably the University of Leeds, but also for being a major UK financial centre. Of course, much of what happens in any city will affect the type of accommodation to be found there: Leeds hotels with conference facilities for business travellers, hotel accommodation near the university of Leeds for perhaps parents visiting their siblings, and more.

You can find a whole range of different hotels in Leeds, from Victorian to modernist contemporary accommodation. Most Leeds hotels provide bed and breakfast accommodation, although often this depends upon the hotel's price range, for instance whether you require a cheap, budget or luxury hotel in Leeds. However, those with a keen eye for a budget hotel could easily search for late deals and bargains, since Leeds is crammed full of hotels competing with each other. You can even find Leeds hotels near most of the city's attractions, for instance Leeds Art Gallery, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, or the Royal Armouries.

You will find that hotel accommodation in other towns and cities in Yorkshire share some similarities with Leeds, particularly the Victorian-style architecture, such as Harrogate hotels, Whitby hotels, and hotels in York.

Harrogate Hotels

Harrogate is ideal for a peaceful holiday in a traditional Yorkshire town. Famous as a spa town, a favourite retreat for wealthy Victorians, and also the place to which Agatha Christie 'escaped' during her 'disappearance', this place offers an amazing selection of Harrogate hotels.

Harrogate has all manner of possible hotels, from cheap and budget to 3/4/5 star luxury accommodation. As with those in Leeds, most hotels in Harrogate offer bed and breakfast options, many with full English breakfast, buffet and Continental options. However, this will depend on the hotel you choose. Many low cost hotels, for instance cheap to budget, may not provide breakfast with the accommodation fee. But you can more or less guarantee breakfast with hotels in the 3/4 star or luxury price ranges. If you do require bed and breakfast at a hotel in Harrogate, though, it is advisable to check before you book.

Harrogate is one of the finer towns in the Yorkshire Dales, but if you're looking elsewhere in Yorkshire for accommodation, then maybe you could try a hotel in Leeds or, if you prefer coastal holidays, try one of the hotels in Whitby.

Whitby Hotels

Whitby is an old place. It dates from the early medieval period, around the 7th century, and now thrives as one of Yorkshire's most visited coastal towns. Because of the tourism, many Whitby hotels have sprung up all over the town. They provide accommodation at different price ranges, from cheap budget hotels to 5 star luxury hotels.

Most of the hotels at higher price ranges provide bed and breakfast options: full English, buffet, Continental. Furthermore, because Whitby is a well-renowned fishing port, you can find lots of delicious, locally caught fish food in many of the whitby hotel restaurants. This is a little similar to the hotels in Scarborough that, because of their coastal locations, also serve seafood in their restaurants.

Whitby hotels are also great for seeing many of the cultural relics, scenes and attractions. For instance, Whitby is famous for Britain's most famous maritime explorer, Captain James Cook; and also for its influence on Bram Stoker's famous novel, Dracula. Other famous places include Whitby Abbey, and St Mary's Church.

Scarborough Hotels

This North Yorkshire coastal town is a mixture of modern and old, encompassing elements from many different periods of history. Despite this, Scarborough is most noted as a seaside resort, with its own pedestrian-friendly promenade, bay, harbour, and even an 11th century castle: Scarborough Castle.

There are lots of different hotels in Scarborough to choose from. For those on a budget, you can find cheap, low-cost Scarborough hotels without the frills of a luxury hotel. Some of them come with bed and breakfast options, but of course this depends on the price range of hotel you wish to stay in. Some of the hotels in Scarborough overlook the North or South Bays, or have rooms that provide beautiful views of the sea. Others are located close to the Spa Conference Centre, and other amenities.

If you look in our iknow-Yorkshire hotel listings, we are host to some of Scarborough's most famous hotels, including The Grand Hotel and The Crown Spa Hotel, which was the first purpose-built hotel in Scarborough.

For more Yorkshire coastal town accommodation, you can look to hotels in Whitby, or hotels in Bridlington.

Yorkshire Hotel Types and Hotel Size

In Yorkshire most large hotel groups can be found in Yorkshire cities such as hotels in Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield and York hotels. There is a particularly good range of conference and luxury hotels in Harrogate. Group consortia hotels generally offer excellent leisure and conference facilities, with all en-suite rooms, function rooms and some may be licensed for civil wedding ceremonies. Country house hotels usually pertain to some historic character and are usually set within their own grounds, offering perfect wedding and event settings. Townhouse hotels may be a little smaller, but benefit from close proximity to town centre attractions.

Small Yorkshire hotels will range in size up to 20 rooms. Smaller hotels have more of a guesthouse feel, where you're assured a little extra attention, but with all standard amenities you'd expect from hotel service, including in-house bar and restaurant service . Most are family run and privately owned, with a more relaxed atmosphere than a large hotel.

Medium hotels range from 20 to 50 rooms, and with increased size comes more services such as staffed reception, room service, sometimes in-house entertainment, and some leisure facilities. As hotels become larger, decor generally becomes more uniform, which may suit for conference events. Large Hotels wil have more than 50 rooms. Some may be privately owned, but many with be part of hotel groups, offering the benefit of knowing what to expect as consortia generally offer the same services across their range of hotels. With large hotels, you can often benefit from discount deals, or voucher and points schemes which are particularly useful for frequent business guests, or if you take may weekend breaks. In luxury large Yorkshire hotels, expect extensive leisure, health and beauty facilities - with the obligatory indoor swimming pool, conference facilities, in-house entertainment, internet access, staffed 24 hour reception service, plus usually good disabled access with lifts to all floors and often adapted rooms for disabled guests.

Yorkshire Hotel Star Ratings - One and Two Star Hotels

In England we now have an amalgamated rating system for accommodations. For Hotels, the star rating system applies and whether it's ETC, RAC or AA star ratings, they all follow the same definition below, which is good news and avoids confusion. These definitions apply only to England, not Scotland and Wales which have their own hotel rating systems. The Star rating scheme is awarded from one to five stars for hotels. The rating reflects on issues of quality including customer care, the range of services available, and the variety and standard of facilities. As a basic minimum the one-star hotel has guaranteed at least 75% of bedrooms with en-suite or private facilities. For those rare five star hotels, guests are assured of luxurious and spacious accommodation to the highest standards of international quality, accompanied by service excellence and superior cuisine. A hotel with a two star rating will include all criteria of a one star hotel, plus additions, and a three star hotel will include all two star hotel services plus extras and so forth. When you see a star rating you know that the hotel has been visited overnight and anonymously by qualified inspectors working to the same high standards, making it easier for you to identify quality accommodation you can trust

One Star Hotels - with a One Star Hotel rating guests can be assured of a high standard of cleanliness and practical, ample facilities and services. Service will be friendly, with friendly staff always on hand to assist. A restaurant service and eating area for breakfasts and sometimes evening meal services will be available. In summary then expect at least 75% of bedrooms with en-suite or private bathroom facilities, plus alcoholic drinks served in a lounge or bar area.

Two Stars - A two star rated hotel will provide above average comfort and facilities, included well equipped bedrooms. All rooms will have en-suite or private bathroom amenities and expect as standard a colour tv, a high standard of personal service and good food and drink. In summary expect a restaurant or dining room serving breakfast seven days a week and evening meal/dinner at least five days a week. Also, a lift may be available for extra accessibility.

Yorkshire Hotel Star Ratings - Three, Four and Five Star Hotels

Three 3 Star Hotels - A three star hotel may well be a little larger, offering extra facilities and services. Quality will be higher and public spaces, including lounge, bar and other public amenities within the hotel such as games rooms, will be larger, as will bedrooms generally. As you'd expect with a slightly larger hotel, services such as reception service, in-house staff and room service options are likely. Usually a room service option of continental breakfast will be available. In summary, expect a higher standard of personal service, more extensive facilities and often larger lounges, bars and other public areas. Usually there will be a reception service, with in-house staff always on hand to help with your needs. This will be accompanied by a room service offering continental breakfasts in the room. Extensive choice of drinks and snacks will be served in bars or lounges, and there will usually be a laundry service.

Four 4 Star Hotels - A four star hotel gives that little bit extra than a three star, including a higher standard of excellence. Comfort and quality will be higher, including all bedrooms having en-suite bath, shower and toilet facilities. Four star hotels will be spacious with large and well appointed public areas like lounges, bars and games rooms, as well as function rooms often equipped for full in-house entertainment programmes. Staff will be fully trained and always on hand to assist, anticipating the needs of guests. As you'd expect, room service will apply for all means with a 24 hour refreshment and snack service. A dry cleaning service will also usually be offerred.

Five 5 Star Hotels - Five star hotels have achieved the highest luxurious standard possible to achieve, and with a five star you really know you're getting luxury facilities, with rooms beautifully and tastefully furnished and all en-suite. Individuality will often pertain to five star hotels, with each room having it's own individual appeal and style. Cuisine in-house in restaurants will be of the finest standards, usually prepared by experienced chefs. Extra luxuries will be standard, including touches such as dressing gowns, extensive toiletries provided in rooms, fruits, flowers and other foods and drinks in rooms. Personal care and service is guaranteed, with attentive staff providing the highest quality of service catering for your needs. Five star hotels then will provide the highest international standards for the hotel industry, accompanied by an atmosphere of luxury, style and panache!
