The Brontes and Museums - Cultural Days Out in Yorkshire urr & Yorkshire Shopping

Yorkshire is synonymous with the Brontes and Haworth does not disappoint as the ultimate leisure arts pursuit venue. Haworth Parsonage was built in 1799, and enlarged in the 1860s. The Bronte Society took it over in 1927, and turned it into the Bronte Parsonage Museum, with rooms and furnishings as they would have been in the mid-1850s. Inevitably, this place of literary pilgrimage has become a bit of a crowd packed nightmare, aptly described by Sylvia Plath in her journals as 'They touched this, wore that' syndrome! However, the museum is less crowded on weekdays, and out of the Summer season and is still a fascinating experience - those miniature Gondal books written by the Bronte children are a key highlight.

Yorkshire for leisure art galleries will amaze - check out Dean Clough in Halifax - an enormous converted mill complex, or Salts Mill, Saltaire, not to mention the superb Yorkshire sculpture park near Wakefield. Book yourself into a sheffield town centre hotel or guesthouse, and some of the best art galleries in the country will be on your doorstep. The Sheffield Galleries are 'committed to enriching the lives of it's audience, and they certainly will do that if you pay them a visit! What's on offer - well at the Graves Art Gallery (opened 1934) above the central library you'll find works by prestigious artists such as Pablo Picasso, Helen Chadwick and Pierre Bonnard. All works are displayed within a fabulously lit space, and the gallery plays host to visiting exhibitions as well.

Ahh, beautiful Meadowhall shopping mall near Sheffield. Who could resist this self-contained metropolis. The lights, the razzle, the losing your car in the car park! Meadowhall is conveniently placed just off the M1, and a short drive from Sheffield so you can combine your visit with a nose around the superb Sheffield - excellent for theatres, cinemas and museums. Check out also good specialist shopping in York, Harrogate and Hebden Bridge - wot wot, and of course charming Yorkshire Dales villages such as Skipton, Grassington and the excellent Fairfield Mill in Sedbergh!
