Doncaster Airport South Yorkshire, known as Robin Hood Airport, saw its first commercial flight on Thursday 28th April 2005. The flight to Palma, Majorca operated by Thompson Holidays marked the opening of the UK's newest airport and the first large airport to be opened since Stansted in 1966.

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield

The new South Yorkshire airport is officially known as Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield and offers flights to European destinations such as Majorca but aims to also have long haul flights to Florida, Mexico and the Dominican Republic on stream next summer.

More than 600 people are already employed at the South Yorkshire site and the number is expected to rise to 7,000 within 10 years. Robin Hood Airport at Doncaster fills a gap in airport services to the Yorkshire, Humber and surrounding regions.

Robin Hood Airport at Doncaster has a long history as RAF Finningley which was opened in 1936 and served as a front line bomber command base during World War II. Local residents thought the airbases' days had come to an end in March 1995 when the Ministry of Defence decided that the airbase was surplus to requirements. However, the perfect infrastructure already in place provided the ideal site for this new South Yorkshire airport.

Currently passengers can board flights at Robin Hood Airport to 33 destinations, across 20 different countries, and shortly transatlantic flights to Florida, the Dominican Republic and Mexico will be available. An airport at Donaster is welcome news for South Yorkshire and it's many attractions including Doncaster Races, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and nearby Sheffield with it's many theatres, shops and art galleries. It's now easy to access these areas, plus it's welcome news for business visitors to the region, offering a cheap travel alternative to gridlock on the M1!

Disabled toilets are available on both the ground and first floors of the terminal.

How to Get To Robin Hood Airport

Robin Hood Airport has lots of things going for it, in particular the transport networks and services in and out. This new Doncaster Airport is easily reached by car, with easy access off the M62, M1, A1 and the M18.

Doncaster Railway Station is the nearest station, just 7 miles from the airport. An Arrow Airport Shuttle service, fully disabled compliant with current legislation, runs frequently from and to the airport. Robin Hood Airport is also well served by the local bus service, plus ample taxis are available.
