Gibson Mill and Hardcastle Crags

Evidence of the industrial revolution is everywhere in Hardcastle Crags including the marks of old quarry work and spectacular centrepiece Gibson Mill now with new interactive exhibit on the history of the mill and Hardcastle Crags inside.

Gibson Mill and its reservoir with water taken from adjacent Hebden Water is a water mill built in 1800 and is much smaller than later industrial revolution mills found in West Yorkshire such as Salt's Mill, Saltaire north of Bradford or mammoth Dean Clough in Halifax, once home to Crossleys Carpets.

Its survival is due in large part to the fact that it was much later converted into a restaurant and tea dancing centre around 1900, with a small shop selling 'Cedars Aerated Waters'. (see picture postcard c 1900 in the Alice Longstaff Gallery Collection/information at Hebden Bridge Tourist Information Centre).
