Following the trail of 'kitch castles' in the area (see also Dobroyd Castle in Todmorden) Cliffe Caste, purchased by the Butterfield family in the 1840s, is well worth a visit. The Butterfield family were somewhat eccentric mill owners and successful worsted spinners and manufacturers.
It was Henry Isaac Butterfield (1819-1910), the most eccentric of the Butterfields who transformed Cliffe Hall into Cliffe Castle with gothic 'Grand Tower' and glass conservatories in 1878.
Particular highlights include the extensive fossils, rocks and minerals collection and the William Morris stained glass. The collection of olds toys held here at Cliffe Castles is another feature. Activities and events take place throughout the year, with changing exhibitions pulling on the museum's extensive collection. Find out more via the Cliffe Castle Museum webguide link right.
