Leeds Art Gallery lays claim to what's widely considered the finest collection of 19th and 20th century British art outside of London, whilst the neighbouring Henry Moore Institute's galleries are a hub for sculpture. (the two galleries are interconnected from the inside so you can move easily between them).

Smaller emerging contemporary art studios and art retail outlets are further boosting the Leeds arts scene on both the national and international arts stage. Leeds Art Gallery is widely acknowledged as the best art gallery outside London for its collection of 20th century British Art. That's not all, here at the Leeds Art Gallery, boosted by the nearby Henry Moore Institute, you'll find one of the country's most impressive sculpture collections.

Prestigious contemporary art works are constantly accumulating here with some of the best rising stars exhibited including Portugal's Paula Rego. Other highlights in the Leeds Art Gallery collection include work by JMW Turner, Cozens and Girtin, and the Leeds artist Atkinson Grimshaw is well represented alongside French work by Sisley and Derain. Admission is free, find leeds art gallery in the heart of the city centre adjacent to Leeds Central library and not far from the striking town hall. The gallery is wheelchair friendly throughout with disabled toilets on-site and lift to the first floor. Free street parking is available to orange badge holders situated around the gallery.

Henry Moore Institute Leeds

Situated in the heart of Leeds' cultural centre hub - The Headrow, and conveniently next to the Leeds Art Gallery, the Henry Moore Institute is the definitive site for British sculpture from the second half of the 19th century. Overall the Leeds Museums and Galleries hold around 700 sculptures alongside numerous drawings by artists who are renowned particularly for their sculpture.

The Institute prepares sculpture exhibitions for other Leeds galleries, particularly the next door Leeds Art Gallery, but the Henry Moore Institute also has some beautiful exhibition galleries of its own, with constantly changing and touring exhibitions. If you're new to sculpture you'd be hard pushed to find a betterr introduction, and if you've prior knowledge you'll find longstanding names such as Henry Moore, Julio Gonzalez and Dimitri Paciurea here at the Institute.

Leeds Art Galleries & Studios

42 New Briggate Leeds is an initiative by Opera North with a remit to combine contemporary visual art with opera. Situated next door to the Leeds Grand Theatre, this gallery is free to all and well worth a visit. The gallery here on the Leeds Met's Studio Theatre site is a hub for up and coming new artists. Opening times are Mon-Sat 11am-5pm, Weds 11am-7pm. Admission is free.
