Skipton in Airedale Tourist Information

The gateway to the Dales, Skipton in Airedale is one of the Yorkshire Dales' most delightful market towns. Skipton's choice of specialist shopping is a dream, and the town boasts the historic Skipton Castle and popular family attraction Hesketh Farm Park sits just east of Skipton at Bolton Abbey.

A further boost feature in Skipton is the Leeds Liverpool canal which winds through the town offering ample opportunity for narrowboat trips. The Settle & Carlisle historic railway also winds its way past Skipton and the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway starts at Embsay station just outside Skipton.

Historic Bolton Abbey with its extensive woodland and moorland grounds is within easy reach as are numerous other Yorkshire Dales hotspot locations such as Settle, Malham, Grassington, Pateley Bridge and historic spa towns Harrogate and Ilkley.

Settle, Malham, The Three Peaks and Ribblesdale

The famous three peaks of the Yorkshire Dales include Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside. Ancient bridleways and paths fill the area, and you can explore on foot by mountain bike or on horseback. The picturesque Settle-Carlise Railway weaves through the area, with main station Settle taking in the spectacular Ribblehead viaduct north of Horton.

Attractive Dales market town Settle makes a superb walking base from which to explore the Three Peaks. Specialist shopping is superb in Settle, with an good choice of restaurants, country pubs and tearooms and ample B&B, hotel and self catering accommodation in the Settle area.

Grassington & Wharfedale

The Southern Dales offers some charming villages with specialised shops including arts and crafts, walker's clothing and eateries. One of the best is beautiful Grassington.

Not by accident is Grassington Wharfedale's most popular village and convenient walking base for exploring both Wharfedale and pushing north into Nidderdale AONB.

Grassington boasts a fine selection of country pubs, tearooms, restaurants and B&Bs. The Upper Wharfedale Folk Museum is within the town and nearby show caves offer superb climbing territory. Also popular in the area are outdoor pursuits horse rising, fly fishing on the River Wharfe and of course moorland and riverside walking.
