Attractive Dales market town Settle makes a superb walking base from which to explore the Three Peaks. Specialist shopping is superb in Settle, with an good choice of restaurants, country pubs and tearooms and ample B&B, hotel and self catering accommodation in the Settle area.

The famous three peaks of the Yorkshire Dales include Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside. Ancient bridleways and paths fill the area, and you can explore on foot by mountain bike or on horseback. The picturesque Settle-Carlise Railway weaves through the area, taking in a spectacular viaduct.
Wildlife and spectacular limestone pasture and bare stone abound in the Ingleborough area, particularly in the Ingleborough National Nature reserve. Visit the charming town of Settle with its open air market on Tuesdays. You'll also find the Yorkshire Dales Falconry and Conservation Centre at Settle.

The whole of the three peaks area is dotted with footpaths, making it perfect walking country. Caves also abound, making the area a favourite for pot holers. In the heart of the Three Peaks is Bentham with the unusual great stone at Fourstones.
Widely considered as one of the most scenic railway journies in England, the historic Settle-Carlisle Railway line runs for 72 miles from Settle in the Yorkshire Dales upto Carlisle. First opened to the public in May 1876, the line takes in the famous 24 arched Ribblehead Viaduct and the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor. The route also pushes through stunning Dentdale, leaving the Dales at Garsdale then on through the Eden Valley to Carlisle.
Both steam and diesal trains operate on the line, and you can hook into the route from Leeds, Blackpool, Preston and Blackburn. Stations along the 72 mile line include Settle, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dent, Garsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, Langwathby, Lazonby, Armathwaite and Carlisle.
