Holiday attraction choice around Scarborough is impressive, with everything from outdoor adventure activity centres and family farm/animal parks to sublime coastal walking on the menu. Move just a few miles inland around East and West Ayton for a superb choice of family animal farm parks, farm shops and further into the park for outdoor adventure activities at Dalby Forest. Just 2 miles south of Scarborough town centre sits Oliver's Mount Road Racing Circuit - a mecca for motorcycle and car racing fans. Oliver's Mount plays host to Scarborough's annual Festival of Speed in April.
The Coastline south and north of Scarborough offers more holiday treats. The 109 mile Cleveland Way National trail skirts round the North Yorkshire Moors National Park from Helmsley, across and down the Yorkshire Coast from Saltburn to Filey. You're in designated UK heritage coast territory here and stunning coastal walking is to had particularly between Whitby and Scarborough taking in picture postcard villages such as Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar and Cloughton. The Ravenscar and Robin Hood's Bay coast is rich in the industrial history of alum, jet and ironstone mining. Move south of Scarborough to Cayton Bay for superb surfing conditions. Championship golf, Bronze Age burial sites and the historic Scarborough to Whitby Railway line are all in the area. The railway line, which closed in the mid 1960s, passes through Cloughton village and Ravenscar and is now popular for horse riding, cycling and walking.
The Auto 66 Club, the organisation behind Oliver's Mount race meets and more racing at the Elvington site near York started life small in 1966 and has grown into one of the most popular car and motorcycle race courses in the UK. Situated just south of Scarborough town centre racing has been so popular here that the club is looking to open another track in the near future.
The Scarborough Oliver's Mount Circuit is 2.43 miles long (see a map of the circuit via the webguide). The annual calendar here consists of motorcycle Road Race meetings, Speed Hill Climbs for both motorcycles and cars and Sprint events.

Alongside some good surfing at Scarborough's North Bay, surfers head just 3 miles south of Scarborough to Cayton Bay. Cayton Bay Surf Shop (weblink right) offers equipment hire and surf school and ample parking is available near the beach.

A top family day out near Scarborough (just 3 miles west on the A170) is to be had at Betton Farm Visitor Centre and Animal Farm. (see Betton's funpacked webguide right for details). On-site you've an adventure play area and children's animal farm with goats, Sofie the Shetland pony, donkeys and rabbits, plus a tearoom, a farm shop and the Betton Birds of Prey Conservation Centre. Admission is a nice cheap price, with lots of opportunities for hands-on involvement. A working honey bee farm is also at Bretton with extensive exhibition of working honey bees which also digs into the history and life of bees.

The magnificent Cleveland Way is a 109 mile/176km trail winding up from its starting point at Helmsley to the Sutton Bank Centre in a horseshoe shape around the outskirts of the North York Moors Park and down the Yorkshire coast from Saltburn to Filey. One of the highlight stretches along the coastal trail sits between Whitby and Scarborough, incorporating the National Trust Centre at Peakside Ravenscar and the jointly run Old Coastguard Station with exhibition and education centre run by both the North York Moors National Park Authority and the National Trust. Pick up maps and local wildlife leaflet guides here at these centres. Stunning clifftop walking, panoramic views, cliff grassland, meadows and woodland and numerous nesting birds and wildlife are what walkers along the Cleveland Way coastal stretch can expect to see. The area around Ravenscar and Robin Hood's Bay is rich in industrial history - particularly remains of the alum, jet and ironstone mining industry.
The seawood edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park is one of the UK's special designated Site of Special Scientific Interest Heritage Coasts. The stretch between Robin Hood's Bay and Ravenscar reveals distinctive dar Jurassic rock layers in the cliffs and has thrown up numerous minerals and fossils. Nolonger in use, the historic Scarborough to Whitby railway line which used to transport huge numbers of holiday visitors to the coast from 1865 to the mid 1960s runs right through Ravenscar and offers today traffic free cycling, walking and horse riding. The Station House Tea Room is open 10.30am til 5pm on Saturdays, Sundasy, Mondays and Tuesdays year round.

The Championship golf course here was originally designed by Tom Chisholm of St Andrews dating from 1891. Two pre-historic sites of national interest sit near Scarborough - the Standingstone Rigg Bronze Age burial site and the Mesolithic Settlement at Seamer - Star Carr. Little evidence remains of the settlement at Star Carr, but there have been numerous findings here of wooden tools and artefacts which you'll find on display at the spectacular Rotunda Geology Museum in Scarborough town centre. A lake once sat on the Star Carr site which dates from 8700BC, but today it's waterlogged. Access Star Carr via the footpath from Main Street Flixton on the east side of the A64. Standingstone Rigg Bronze Age burial mound sits just on the edge of Harwood Dale forest off the Scarborough/Whitby Road. Central stones remain on the mound but excavated cup and ring marked stones are now on-show in Scarborough's museums.
