Founded in Scarborough in 1955 by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph, the theatre didn't move to its present home in spectacular modernist one-time Scarborough Odeon Cinema until 1996. The theatre's particular edge today is Ayckbourn who is the theatre's artistic director and the Stephen Joseph Theatre serves as opening house for most of his new plays. The very best of cutting edge drama is what to expect alongside classical music nights and some film screenings. The in-house art Deco theatre restaurant - Nineteen 36 is open for lunch, pre-theatre dining and evening meals. See Sample menus via the theatre's webguide.
