Esk Valley Railway North Yorkshire Moors Railway Whitby Steam Railways Yorkshire UK

Right in the centre of Whitby on the west side of the river sits Whitby railway station where you can hook into two of Yorkshire's best heritage steam railway journies - The Esk Valley Railway and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The Esk Valley line moves south west to Grosmont then west towards Danby and onto Middlesborough taking in the scenic northerrn edge of the North York Moors. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway connects at Grosmont (then onto Whitby). From Grosmont the line heads south via Goathland (site for the popular tv series Heartbeat) and on down to Pickering. You're in a prime location in Whitby to enjoy both these scenic railways, with numerous picturesque stations, walking opportunities, family attractions and pretty Yorkshire Moors villages on-route.

Esk Valley Railway from Whitby

The stunning Esk Valley Railway line pushes south west from Whitby through the Esk Valley into the North York Moors linking Whitby with Grosmont. At Grosmont the Esk line connects with the North Yorkshire Moors Railway down to Pickering. Alternatively you can stay on the Esk Valley line moving west through Egton, Lealholm, Danby, Battersby and Great Ayton then on upto Middlesbrough. See a comprehensive map via the Esk Valley Railway's webguide right. You'll also find up-to-date Summer timetables - Esk Valley trains operate daily from Whitby to Middlesbrough.

The line runs through some historic picturesque stations. The little isolated station of Battersby on the edge of the North York Moors is where trains reverse and you're touching railway history particularly on the stretch between 1950s Grosmont Station to Whitby. This stunning line was the engineering work of George Stephenson and dates from 1830.

You can hop off and on at any of the stations on-route. The Great Ayton and Kildale area is a popular spot for walking. Or hop off at Grosmont or Egton for a tour of the picturesque villages here which contain a choice of country pubs and specialist shops.
